swatch

Above: swatch from book " The Dictionary of Needlework" a facsimile of the 1882 edition, Arno press c1972 p289. I also found charted versions in newer stitch dictionaries.
Working the blossom pattern from the Laminaria shawl pattern from Knitty. The yarn is Queensland BEBE cotsoy a 50/50 soy & cotton blend.

FREE PATTERN "HOT HAT"


cause i see the letters H_O_T!
Materials:
1 ball of main color { mc }
1 ball of contrasting color { cc }
2 US 3 circular needle, or set of double point needles or needle size to obtain Gauge: 5 stitches = 1 inch on stockinette stitch

Cast on stitches divisible by 4 using the main color. Join & don't twist..
for a 22- inch circumference hat I cast on 88 sts.
1. Start with any edge that you like i.e. 2x2 ribbing, or corrugated ribbing . rib for 6-8 rounds. Note: At this point use one of the 2 circular needles.

2.Pick up the CC & work the pattern once { or twice, if you like}

Round 1. K1 MC, K1 CC around.
Rnd. 2. K with the CC around.
Rnd. 3. K 1 CC, K3 MC around.
Rnd. 4. K 1 MC, K1 CC around.
Rnd. 5. same as rnd. 4.
Rnd. 6. * K 2 MC, K 1CC, K1 MC* repeat from asterisk.
Rnd. 7. & rnd 8. K1 MC, K1 CC around.
Rnd. 9. K 1 CC, K3 MC around.
Rnd. 10. K with CC around.
Rnd. 11. K1 MC, K1 CC around.
Knit around, using main color in stockinette for 5-8 inches total length including the ribbing.
Decrease as :
1. K 9 sts k2tog { knit 2 together}. ( 8 sts decreased )
2. K 8 sts k2tog.
3. K 7 sts k2tog.
4. K 6 sts k2tog. .. continue decreasing this way until 16 sts remain. Cut yarn, leaving 6 inches & use it to thread the 16 sts & cinch. work in yarn ends . Block. Wear atop your head!

Circular shawl from knit doily

I knitted this circular shawl from a doily pattern by Coats & Clark booklet "Laces to knit, crochet & tat" book no.317 c 1985. Above picture - shawl being blocked & below before blocking. The shawl measures 60 inches diameter, the centerpiece is 22.5 inches in diameter worked in crochet cotton.I used fingering wool & US needle #7 circular. I added more rows as edging.
